Explaining the need for insurance in a salon

Whether you are a current salon owner or aspiring to be one, you should be aware of the risks and challenges a business can face. Owning a salon can enable you to do what you love whilst making your clients feel great, however, you still need to protect your business from accidents, fire, damage, or theft.

By minimising risks within your business, such as installing a sophisticated surveillance system or following beauty industry health and safety standards and government guidelines, you may be able to combat some of these challenges, however, you simply cannot eliminate all risks entirely.

Why salon insurance is important

Claims

If something goes wrong, you may receive a claim against you which could be difficult to settle if it involves legal matters. Salon insurance will help you deal with the legal proceedings ensuring the process is as hassle-free as possible.

Costs

When a compensation claim is made against your business, it may be a significant cost to settle that you simply cannot afford to pay. By having professional salon insurance in place, you could be protected against the financial outlay involved with a compensation claim.

Reputation

If a client sustains an injury during treatment or has a poor experience whilst at your salon, they could be within their rights to make a claim against you which could be detrimental to the reputation of your business.

If you handle any complaints in a forgiving manner, and if a client’s claim is dealt with professionally and quickly, clients could be more forgiving about the situation. By adopting this approach, you could avoid any negative comments or complaints being shared online or amongst friends and family members which could be harmful to your business.

Employers Liability Insurance

If you have one or more employees at your salon, you are required to have employer’s liability cover.

Employers liability insurance is responsible for protecting employees that fall ill or sustain an injury whilst work. It also protects your business in the event an employee sues the salon.

Public Liability Insurance

Although public liability is not a legal requirement, it will help to ensure your business is protected in case a claim arises.

Public liability will protect you from any accidents or incidents such as slips, trips, and spills. There are many liquids such as water, shampoo, conditioner and oils at salons, as well as equipment and machinery with cables that easily create a hazardous environment.

You will also be protected from any accidents caused by salon equipment, for example, a straightener burn or an accidental clip with hair scissors.
