Student insurance – what is it and do I need it?

At Professional Beauty Direct, we understand that everyone’s career has to start somewhere and those in the early stages of their training are fully focused on qualifying but another thing to think about is obtaining professional student insurance.

Practise is an important part of learning to ensure you become a competent therapist, even if you are practicing on friends and family it is still essential you have insurance in place. Mistakes and accidents can happen whilst practicing and this is all part of learning and helping you to become the best therapist you can be. Our insurance policy for students offers public, product and treatment liability to cover you for your case studies and for practicing if your tutor has deemed you competent to do so.

 Claims can vary from spilt nail varnish damaging a client’s property or a client suffering a reaction to an eyebrow tint. Our insurance is here to protect you from claims made against you.

• Public liability cover: Protection if your client suffers a nontreatment based injury, for example tripping up a step.
• Third party property damage: Protection if you accidentally damage a client’s property if you visit their home.
• Treatment liability: Protection if your client sustains an injury or illness as a result from a treatment provided by you.
• Product liability: Protection against an injury caused by products sold or supplied by you.

We can offer you student cover providing that you:

• Only carry out treatments which you have been taught and where regular supervision is in place
• Declare to your clients that you are not fully qualified
• If you are wanting to charge a fee, ensure it is a modest amount and lower than what a qualified, experienced therapist would charge

Our student policy is £20 inclusive of insurance premium tax for one year and once you have qualified you can then upgrade your insurance with us to cover you as a fully trained therapist.
