Importance of checking your salon while unoccupied

The government lockdown meant that some salons have not been occupied since the official lockdown began on Monday 23rd March 2020.  As a responsible salon owner you will have regularly inspected your premises whilst you were unable to trade but with mini lockdowns potentially being imposed at short notice you should always think of what you can do to keep your premises safe and reduce the risk of an incident occurring that could be catastrophic to your business.

If your salon is still closed, or is asked to close at short notice, here are some important things to consider:

  • Do you have any cash in the premises that you can remove?
  • Can any equipment be locked in a secure cupboard?
  • Are there any contents or stock of a high value which could be removed from the premises to a more secure location?
  • Is it possible for your water pipes to be drained down to avoid any possible water damage?
  • Is your intruder alarm up to date and in good working order?
  • Ensure that any accumulations of combustible materials such as junk mail and newspapers are to be removed during each inspection of the Premises.
  • It could be an idea to contact any neighbouring premises and leave your contact details so they can get in touch should any issues arise
  • Unplug any non-essential electrical equipment
  • Ensure air conditioning/cooling for computer servers, etc is functioning
  • Close internal doors
  • Ensure CCTV cameras working
  • Ensure Doors and windows are locked
  • Ensure Shutters are locked in place
  • Check Security lighting is working
  • Report any evidence of attempted entry, damage, etc. to the police
  • At least weekly inspections are to be made of the Premises by yourself or a responsible person acting on your behalf
  • Check with your insurer what unoccupancy conditions you should be adhering to in order to stay covered.

With the latest government announcement allowing all hair and beauty treatments to be carried out with restrictions, salon owners are busy getting themselves ready to reopen all over the UK if they haven’t done so already.

Making sure your beauty salon or spa is a safe space for both clients and staff when you reopen is a top priority.

All of us here at Professional Beauty Direct wish you all a safe return to work!
