With just a few weeks to go until Christmas, you have probably already experienced the effects of the cold weather on your skin. Although Christmas will be a little different this year, you will still no doubt be getting glam for the festive period, even if it is for a virtual family gathering!
How can this time of year affect the skin?
Christmas is a time for family and celebration so over-indulgence, alcoholic drinks and late nights are expected but these can all unfortunately have an impact on your skin.
Your diet can have an impact on your skin, so the sudden intake of sugary snacks and drinks will lead to a rise in high blood sugar – this causes inflammation in the body which can cause sagging and wrinkles as this breaks down the collagen. It can stimulate sebum production and hormone imbalance which in turn can cause redness and spots too.
That’s the effects of sugary foods but what about salty? High levels of salt will cause water retention which can make your face look puffy and swollen. Salty party foods lead to dehydration too, which can make the skin look dull.
Alcohol consumption is also incredibly dehydrating and causes blood vessels to dilate (which is why you may appear red-faced after a few glasses). Over time, this redness can persist, and thread veins can become visible in the face
So how can you have glowing skin over this festive period?
Make Time for Yourself
Christmas can be such a busy time for us all. Buying gifts, prepping to see family, decorating the house and end of year work rush are all reasons as to why we may not give enough time for ourselves. But it’s so important that you do! Ensure you are getting enough sleep no matter the chaos around you and don’t skip your skincare routine! This is the time of year that your skin arguably needs the most attention.
Over the Christmas period, you may find yourself drinking more alcohol than usual, it’s a time for celebrating of course! If this is the case, you should ensure that you are drinking plenty of water alongside this to hydrate your body and your skin. Dehydrated skin can look flaky and dry which makes fine lines and wrinkles more visible. Drinking a lot of water also helps the body get rid of toxins which is very helpful if you’re over-indulging this year! Make it your morning task to drink a litre of water!
Have Some Alcohol-Free Days
Following on from staying hydrated, having some alcohol-free days will allow your body to recover from a higher alcohol intake than your body is used to. Alcohol can leave your skin looking grey and dull, so to help this, incorporate some hyaluronic acid into your skin care routine as this helps to destroy dead skin cells, firm up skin and hydrate.
Treat Yourself to a Facial
Facials have many benefits at any time during the year, but since it’s Christmas, why not treat yourself? Moisturising facials are especially effective during this time of year and gentle exfoliation will remove any dead skin cells and stimulate your skin’s natural renewal process to give you a glowing festive look!
We at Professional Beauty Direct hope this enables you to have the glowing skin you deserve after a tough year!
